The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed El-Kanemi Warriors coach Aliyu Zubairu as the head coach of the men’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles.
Zubairu’s appointment was announced on Tuesday, just over a month after the NFF announced the window for intending coaches to apply for the job.
He replaces Ladan Bosso, who last handled the team at the African Games in Ghana, as well as the U-20 AFCON and FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr. Aliyu Zubairu as Head Coach of the National U20 Boys, Flying Eagles,” the NFF said in a statement.
“The appointment of Zubairu, who led El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri to win the President Federation Cup at the expense of Abia Warriors FC in Lagos in June, takes immediate effect.”
According to the NFF, Zubairu’s immediate task is to put together a team and prepare them for the WAFU B U-20 Championship, scheduled for October/November in Togo, where the zone’s representative will emerge for next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
Zubairu led El-Kanemi Warriors to the President Federation Cup title in June after guiding them back to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
