On Friday, both the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, resumed their hostilities following a recent court ruling on the emirate tussle between them.

Both Sanusi and Bayero conducted court sessions at their respective palaces. Each of the embattled emirs participated in Friday prayers: one at the Central Mosque and the other at the Nassarawa Mini Palace.

Earlier, the Federal High Court, under the direction of Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, declared Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s actions on May 23, 2024, null and void. However, the court clarified that its ruling did not invalidate the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Bill 2024, which had been passed by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Governor Yusuf’s actions on May 23 included the removal of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the downgrading of the emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye emirates to district head status. This followed the merger of their emirates into the Kano Emirate. Additionally, the Governor reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

The Kano State Government instructed the State Commissioner of Police to remove Bayero from his current palace, citing plans to demolish, renovate, and reconstruct parts of the property. Shortly after the announcement, construction equipment such as caterpillars and trucks arrived at the Government House, indicating readiness for immediate action.

Security measures were heightened at the Nassarawa Mini Palace, with security personnel restricting vehicle access to roads adjacent to and behind the facility.
