England and Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is reportedly open to a transfer this summer after having his ‘head turned’ by Liverpool.
Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign the Three Lions forward last week but remain interested in the player as new manager Arne Slot looks to mould the team to his liking.
Newcastle have no interest in selling one of their star players, but now face a fight to convince Gordon to stay at St. James’ Park.
According to The Telegraph, the Euro 2024 star has had his ‘head turned’ by the Reds and was ‘extremely keen’ on moving to Anfield before the deal collapsed.
The Magpies are worried that the transfer saga has ‘destabilised’ the 23-year-old and are planning to show him a lot of love when he returns from the Euros in order to convince him to stay.
Gordon’s interest in joining Liverpool is understandable given that they are his boyhood club and he spent some time in their academy.
But a transfer there would be controversial as he actually began his career on the blue half of Merseyside at Everton.
After breaking through at Goodison Park, Gordon effectively went on strike in January 2023 to force through a £45million move to Newcastle, but they do not fear a repeat of this scenario as they believe negotiations with Liverpool are done and dusted.
Eddie Howe’s side were desperate to raise cash as they looked to avoid a breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules which could have resulted in a points deduction.
Liverpool failed to meet the asking price for Gordon however and were unwilling to include Jarell Quansah or Joe Gomez in part-exchange.
Thankfully for Newcastle, they were able to raise the £60m needed before the June 30 deadline by selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, as well as agreeing a compensation package to let sporting director Dan Ashworth go to Manchester United.
As a result, they don’t need to worry about PSR for now, making a Gordon sale this summer very unlikely.
For now, Gordon’s focus will be helping England win the Euros, with a quarter-final against Switzerland up next.
