The people of Akpawfu Oyiwode in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State have expressed excitement over Governor Peter Mbah’s development projects, including the vast Akpawfu Farm Estate Project.

However, in a rebuttal made available to South-East PUNCH and jointly signed by representatives of the three autonomous communities that made up Akpawfu, they dismissed an earlier publication in the media titled ‘Host community seeks inclusion in Enugu Farmer Estate Project’ as misleading.

The community averred that the publication erroneously stated that Akpawfu is made up of only two families: Anigbiyovo Oyiwode and Ani Oyiwode.

They stated that historical records, including a 1932 Intelligent Report, reveal that Akpawfu comprises eight primordial families: Umu Agu Oyiwode, Umu Odeaga Oyiwode, Umu Ani Oyiwode, Umu Igweshi Oyiwode, Umu Nnaemkpa Oyiwode, Umu Onovoani Oyiwode, Umu Chime Oyiwode, and Umu Odeanebo Oyiwode. A ninth family, Umu Anigbiyovo, joined later.

The community criticized those behind the said publication for ignoring constituted authorities and failing to support the Enugu State government’s development projects. They cited a lawsuit filed by the Anigbiyovo family against the Enugu State government, which they lost and have since appealed.

They said, “Those individuals who published the said article do not recognize constituted authority as none of the traditional rulers (Igwes) in three Akpawfu autonomous communities were involved or consulted.

“Those individuals do not support the Enugu State government’s development projects; for example, they sued the Attorney-General of Enugu State, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs and others in suit No E/183/2012, for creating autonomous communities in Akpawfu.

“They lost at the High Court in the matter. They have now appealed against the decision of the High Court in the matter, at the Court of Appeal Enugu Judicial Division in Appeal No: CA/E/258/2021.”

The community leaders, however, requested that the Enugu State government disregard the publication and direct the Anigbiyovo family to respect constituted authorities and support development projects.

They added, “We therefore, humbly request all constituted authorities in Enugu State to disregard the publication and direct the Anigbiyovo family in Akpawfu to obey, recognize and respect constituted authorities in the state and support development endeavours by government and good-spirited individuals.

“They should stop fomenting troubles in Akpawfu without justification.

The rebuttal was jointly signed by Igwe Christopher Nnamani of the Ajame Akpawfu autonomous community, Igwe Samuel Nnamoko of the Obodo Uvuru Akpawfu autonomous community, and Dr. Pius Nnamani of Isiagu Akpawfu autonomous community, among others.
