Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has made a shock inclusion in the starting XI by dropping Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.
Both De Ligt and Martinez had a tough time midweek in the 3-3 draw with FC Porto but many would have expected at least one of them would have been named in the starting XI to face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa this afternoon.
Harry Maguire may have earned his place through his late equalizer in Portugal and Ten Hag may feel he had to take drastic action to his XI to try and change form.
Veteran Jonny Evans has been named to partner Maguire which will be an interesting watch to see if they can deal with in-form striker Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran if the latter comes off the bench.
It is a surprising selection from the former Ajax boss but it feels like a last roll of the dice to save his Manchester United career.
Erik ten Hag backs his decision to name Maguire and Evans defensive partnership
When asked pre-match about his decision to name Maguire and Evans in the starting XI the Dutch coach believes he has made the right decision.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Ten Hag said: “Rotation, We have so much games to cover, so we have to bring them all in.
“Of course, you have to look at the opponent, what is needed for this game, and for every game and you make a choice.”
When asked if the pressure on his job affected his decision to drop De Ligt and Martinez, Ten Hag added: “No, nothing to do with that, there is always pressure, but no more than any other game.”
“They don’t even raise this topic, not in the club, not in the team!”
