Erik ten Hag was in high spirits on Sunday night attending an evening hosted by the Football Writers’ Association.
The Dutchman had every reason to have a smile on his face after his United side came from behind to beat Brentford in the Premier League.
It has been a slow start to the season for the Reds, but Ten Hag has not thrown the towel in completely yet. Only a run of positive results will help lift the mood around Old Trafford.
But everyone was in a good mood at last night’s event as Ten Hag took to the stage and joked about swapping jobs with Manchester United correspondent Neil Custis.
“I just spoke with one friend of mine in Germany. He said ‘Maybe you have to suggest one of the football writers to change jobs for two weeks…’,” which prompts a comment in the audience from Custis.
After recognising the hack, Ten Hag smiles before bringing him into the joke.
“So I have a good trip to Istanbul. Really relaxing, you facing Jose?”
Custis replied: “I’ll leave it in your hands.”

Ten Hag working for The Sun, Custis barking orders at United players
Photo by Michael Regan/Getty ImagesIt may sound like we’ve gone mad on this one, but hang with us… it’s a funny thought!
Custis, who covers United for The Sun, sitting in the dugout barking orders on Thursday night when we travel to Istanbul to take on Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
Ten Hag would be perched up in the press box, preparing to rattle Custis in his post-match press conference and stealing the best refreshments.
I’d pay to see Jose Mourinho’s facial expression as he will remember Custis from his time in England.
