A former Manchester United manager has joked that Erik ten Hag’s wife ‘must be on the verge of divorce’.
Benni McCarthy, who was United’s first-team coach under Ten Hag during the 2022-24 season, has spoken about what it’s like to work with the Dutchman. The South African revealed that Ten Hag works until the early hours, tirelessly trying to find the answers to the Red Devils’ problems.
The technician thus revealed to SuperSport: “ I can imagine how frustrating this is for Erik because he is probably one of the hardest working managers I have met. His attention to detail…this man goes to bed at 3 a.m., 4 a.m. Analysts see him from all angles, even if he’s thinking about something at 2 a.m. I’m sure his wife must be on the verge of divorce because it’s her life. It’s non-stop. He works tirelessly and when you put in so much you expect things to go well, but that’s why I say there is something (wrong).”
Ten Hag, workaholic
Ten Hag is once again fighting to save his job at Old Trafford. The Mancuniens occupy 14th place in the Premier League and are struggling to achieve victories. The fact that the club’s hierarchy actively sought his potential successor this summer shows that he may not be far from being fired – despite signing a contract extension until 2026 earlier this year .
The under-fire former Ajax manager hopes his United side can return to winning ways next Saturday when they host Brentford in the Premier League, before traveling to José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on October 24 in Champions League.
