Eternals 2 Is Probably Dead, and Kit Harington’s Not Too Bothered About It

In a recent profile with GQ, Kit Harington seemed to confirm his brief time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane “The Black Knight” Whitman has drawn to a close—and with it, any seeming plan to return to the world of Chloe Zhao’s Eternals altogether.

Following the poor reception to the 2021 film, the article notes its sequel has been “reportedly canned” (a Variety report pulling from the profile further claims that an Eternals sequel was not in development). His character’s planned return in the chronically doomed Blade reboot is additionally unlikely at this point, either, given Harington’s overall feelings about his time in the MCU. “I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting,” Harington said of Eternals. “If Marvel calls, you gotta do it.”

It seems then that the world Eternals left behind will just have to be touched on elsewhere—we already know, for example, that the next Captain America movie is going to be the film that finally picks up on that whole “so hey there’s the petrified corpse of a half-birthed Celestial just hanging in the Indian Ocean” plotline, of all films.

But that gives Harington the opportunity he wants as an actor—to grow beyond what defined him in Game of Thrones. “If you’ve been the young male lead in something, and you could argue that I got given that opportunity because of my appearance. The worry is that that’s all your worth is. And for me, the older I get, the more that drops away. The more I get to accept [that] no, I’m an actor. And I’ve been around for a while. And I’m still working. And so at some point, I have to accept that might have something to do with my talent as well.” Whatever that future holds, it probably won’t involve a return to the MCU any time soon.
