European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has shared a message of support to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the wake of a contentious meeting between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
The encounter, intended to sign a mineral deal, solidify economic agreements, and discuss security assurances, devolved into a heated exchange.
Trump accused Zelenskyy of ingratitude and questioned his commitment to peace, suggesting he was “gambling with global conflict.”
In response, Zelenskyy defended Ukraine’s stance against Russian aggression, leading to an early termination of the meeting.
Ursula wrote on X on Friday night, “Your dignity honours the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President @ZelenskyyUa
“We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.”
This incident is the latest in a series of strained interactions between the two leaders, The Guardian reports.
Their tumultuous relationship dates back to 2019, when President Trump was impeached over allegations of attempting to coerce Zelenskyy into investigating then-presidential candidate Joe Biden’s son by leveraging U.S. military aid.
Although Trump was acquitted by the Senate, the episode left a lasting impact on U.S.-Ukraine relations.
In contrast to the discord with the U.S., European leaders have rallied in support of Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, among others, have expressed solidarity with Zelenskyy, emphasizing their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and resilience.
Ursula von der Leyen’s statement underscores the European Union’s unwavering support, assuring Ukraine that it is not alone in its struggle for a just and lasting peace, sats Cadena Ser.
