Franck Haise’s OGC Nice started their Europa League campaign with a draw against Real Sociedad (1-1).
A few days after its historic success against ASSE in the championship, Nice hoped to be able to follow up with another significant victory. In its stronghold of the Allianz Riviera, it wanted to start its journey in the Europa League by picking up the 3 points against Real Sociedad. Bet missed. The Aiglons could do no better than a draw.
Against the Basques, Haise’s protégés played a rather good match. However, their mistake was to miss their start with a goal conceded after 18 minutes of play by Barrentxea. The opponent was able to take advantage of their rare strong moment to take the advantage.
Nice may have regrets
With their backs to the wall, Nice did not give up. Pushed on by their fans, they put pressure on the Spanish team until they managed to force them into error. Just before the break, Rosario equalized with a low shot from outside the area. Parity was restored and Nice was thought to be on course to reverse the score.
In the second half, the Gym was conquering, doing everything to win. But, success eluded them. Evann Guessand notably missed a penalty in the 55th minute. This was the turning point of the game. The Basques were emboldened and finished the match better. Oyarzabal and his teammates were much more attractive than during their double confrontation against PSG, last season in the Champions League.
For Nice, however, there is no danger in the house. The draw recorded is not catastrophic. Clauss and his team will return to domestic affairs, before challenging Lazio at home on October 3. A meeting that will be even more complicated, especially since the Biancocelesti are on a roll after their stroll against kyiv (3-0).
