Spain have become European football champions of 2024, beating England in a dramatic final match in Berlin Sunday evening.

Spain won the match 2-1 with Nico Williams scoring the first goal for Spain after 47 minutes, and Cole Palmer equalising for England soon after he came on as a substitute for England’s captain Harry Kane.

Spain scored their second goal of the night, with Mikel Oyarzabal putting the decisive ball in the net just four minutes before the end of the match.

Despite the loss, there were instantly calls for the often beleaguered England manager Gareth Southgate to be rewarded with a knighthood for leading the national team to its second successive European Cup final. England previously lost to Italy on penalties in 2021. That match took place at London’s Wembley Stadium, the setting for England’s last victory in an international tournament, 58 years ago, back in 1966.

After Sunday evening, the pursuit to claim to win more silverware must begin afresh.
