It ended Everton Newcastle 0.

Most definitely two points dropped, not one gained.

Newcastle United by some distance the better team.

However, that dominance not turned into goals, somehow.

That due to a combination of poor finishing, bad luck, making the wrong choices when passing/shooting, plus of course the fact both Isak and Wilson were missing.

Newcastle United heading back to Tyneside still wondering how they have left those two points behind…

Looking at the individuals in black and white, interesting to get an independent perspective on how this played out.

Whoscored ratings use data from every single Premier League match, over 200 raw statistics included in the automated calculation of a player’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game.

Every event of importance is taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relation to its area on the pitch and its outcome.’

Now whoscored have published their independent player ratings for this Everton 0 Newcastle 0 match:

Whoscored everton 0 newcastle 0

Ten players who started the match received a rating 7.0 or more, with unbelievably SIX of them playing for the home side!

I can kind of understand Pickford (7.9) getting MOTM for keeping a clean sheet and saving the penalty (although Gordon’s effort really poor) despite Newcastle so dominant… BUT five others???

As for Gordon (6.0) getting the very lowest mark of all 22 players on the pitch, that is laughable. This is maybe where automated ratings go really wrong, as whilst it was a poor penalty and he did put another good chance over the bar, Gordon played well and that is summed up by how often Everton players fouled him WITHOUT getting booked.

Burn (7.3) played decent, Bruno (7.1) and Trippier (7.1) did pretty well, whilst Pope (7.0) made a good save late on.

However, it was really a day when pretty much all the best outfield players were appearing for the away side and just a case of not finishing Everton off
