Barcelona are flying on the field and have scored ten goals in their last two games across all competitions.
While the situation on the field could not be better, there is tension i the board especuially in terms of friction with the opposition presidential campaign.
Joan Laporta’s interview earlier this week was a much-needed one to understand the situation of the club. However, it only increased the enmity of the president with his former competitors as he did not have any positive words for them.
Victor Font’s words
Speaking to the media in a fiery interview and responding to Kon Laporta’s statements on him, Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font shed light on his views on multiple topics and raised questions on Laporta’s board.
He began by reaffirming that he was indeed in strong favor of Laporta resigning and elaborated on the same.
“I keep asking for his resignation. For the first time in a long time, all organized Barcelona collectives and culés agree that we cannot continue with this president.”
“It shows that we are not prepared to face the challenges and take advantage of the potential we have. The president insulted Culés and, in theory, said almost nothing about the enemies of Madrid,” he added.
Font then spoke about possibly initiating a vote of no confidence, saying,
“Until the club is modernized, the motion of censure is the only tool to save the entity, so we can never rule it out. We said the same thing with Bartomeu. The motion destabilizes the club, it is difficult to carry it out, but it must not be ruled out,” he said.
In his press meeting earlier this week, Laporta stated that his opposition groups were only working to destabilize the club, and Font responded to the allegation aggressively.
“To destabilize is to do things wrong. This is about the winter transfer market and keeping an eye on the registrations. This [situation] is what gives the players anguish, not our statement.”
Questions raised on Laporta’s tenure
Font then went on to question Laporta’s decision to sign Dani Olmo when there was no clear plan to register him, especially given how he was registered after Andreas Christensen’s last-minute injury.
“My question is the reason for spending €60 million and not being able to register Dani Olmo. There was no work plan. If Christensen is not injured, what would have happened?”
“Imprudence endangers what we Culés love most. We need a management as God commands,” he added.
He also questioned how Joan Laporta and Co. believed La Liga’s words that the Nike contract would be enough to return to the 1:1 rule given how they have not historically sided with Barcelona.
“The main mistake is to say that in the League they tell us that with the contract with Nike, it is enough. We can’t trust entities from Madrid.”
The presidential candidate then gave his two cents on La Liga, Javier Tebas, and their repeated rejection of Barcelona’s return to the 1:1 rule.
“I have never voted for Tebas and Louzán. Joan Laporta has approved and voted for this type of fair play. If we believe that laws are not appropriate, let’s work to change them.”
Carrying on the long list of questions aimed at the current board, Font asked for more transparency over the sale of VIP seats at Spotify Camp Nou.
“Who is behind the investors of the VIP seats? We cannot explain who they are when in Arab countries transparency is total.”
“The Arab world is growing and, without a doubt, I would do business with them. What is essential in situations like these is transparency,” he added.
“At the press conference, they didn’t explain it to us. They only tell us that Barcelona fans who don’t think like the president are the plague,” he concluded on the topic.
A massive allegation
The Spanish businessman then made a massive accusation on Laporta’s tenure, saying,
“The situation is worse than it was with Bartomeu, the debts are higher, the income is the same and we spend almost the same.”
“I am convinced that in a short time, there will be problems, loving Barça is doing things right, without dark operations or commissions,” he added on the lack of transparency.
Explaining his vision for Barcelona, he also explained how it was important to be transparent, professional, and progressive in today’s world of sports.
“Professionalization and modernization should not be one against the other. Barcelona talent must arrive from all over the world and from all areas.”
“For example, if we created a professional environment for Guardiola, he would surely be willing to return, just like Messi,” he added.
Finally, Font was asked to state one positive development that has happened under Laporta, to which he said,
“Signing Hansi Flick, but this incorporation is the result of chance since two weeks before signing him, a press conference was held to reaffirm Xavi Hernandez.”
