The immediate past Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan has emphasised the critical role of divine intervention and collaborative partnerships in achieving successful reforms.
She said this while reflecting on her tenure at a dinner organised on Thursday by the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation in honour of her retirement in Abuja.
“First of all, before we talk about legacies, I just want to acknowledge and thank God for the success. It is not what any human being could have done, so I acknowledge the help of God,” Yemi-Esan stated, attributing her accomplishments to God.
She highlighted the significance of collaborations, particularly with the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, which facilitated digitalisation efforts within the civil service.
“The partnerships helped a great deal. They provided both personnel expertise and funding”, she said.
She added that these alliances were instrumental in the reforms initiated during her leadership.
Yemi-Esan addressed the challenges faced during her tenure, particularly the resistance to change among civil servants.
“Convincing them that this is a better way was a big challenge. The initial reaction to anything new is resistance,” she explained.
However, she noted that effective communication and engagement with stakeholders were key to overcoming these obstacles.
Looking to the future, she offered advice to her successor, “The most important thing is to hold on to God. There will be challenges, but if you are forthright and if you don’t have hidden agendas, then God sees your heart and will help to make that dream a reality.”
Chairman of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede also spoke at the event, commending Yemi-Esan for her commitment and leadership.
“When one retires with dignity, free from scandal or controversy, it is a commendable achievement,” he remarked.
He shared a message from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who praised Yemi-Esan’s dedication and efficient management during her tenure.
The attendees celebrated not only Dr. Yemi-Esan’s accomplishments but also the ongoing need for integrity and partnership in the civil service, with hopes that her legacy would inspire future leaders.
