Ex-lawmaker from Osun State, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye
An ex-lawmaker from Osun State, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has on Sunday pleaded with the 36 state governors to demonstrate greater commitment and collaborate with President Bola Tinubu as he tackles the economic challenges facing the country.
Oyintiloye stated that a sincere commitment from the governors to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, irrespective of their political affiliations, would put Nigeria on the path to economic prosperity.
In a statement signed by Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress from Osun, and obtained in Osogbo, he said that, upon critically examining various federal government interventions channeled through the states since the removal of the fuel subsidy last year, it has become evident that some governors need to do more to assist the president in meeting Nigerians’ expectations.
The ex-lawmaker stressed that the governors must show more commitment to the welfare of the masses by working towards the success of these interventions, rather than appearing to be complacent.
He declared that the various financial interventions by the federal government to the states to alleviate poverty have not yet been reflected in the overall well-being of the masses. He added that without the sincere support of the governors, the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the masses may be difficult to achieve.
“If some governors were truly committed to supporting the president in delivering good governance, the recent hunger protests could have been avoided. For us to move forward and reduce poverty, the governors must be ready to support the president.
“Although there are some governors who are making genuine efforts to support the president, they are still suspected of not doing enough. The entire burden cannot fall on the president alone; the sincerity of the governors is crucial, especially in cutting wasteful spending and corrupt practices.
“This is not the time for passing the buck. The masses rely heavily on our governors. They are the ones we can see easily. While the President is evidently working hard to alleviate suffering, can the same be said for the governors?” Oyintiloye said.
He acknowledged that various policies by the President to restructure the economy may be causing short-term difficulties but assured that the overall benefits would eventually lead to relief for the masses.
