Manchester United scouts have been keeping a close eye on Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.
This update comes from former Manchester United scout Mick Brown, who spoke to Football Insider about the club’s admiration for the Championship starlet.
Brown adds that United already have a good relationship with Sunderland, despite their fans enjoying a Poznan or two whenever Man City win the Premier League. Oddballs.
The former United scout said: “He’s definitely one they’re interested in. He fits the profile of a young player who they can help develop.
“They’ve had scouts watching him closely at Sunderland nearly every week this season. They will know how good he is and how far they think he can go in the game, and from what I’ve heard they’ve been very impressed.
“Man United have a very good relationship with Sunderland behind the scenes, too.
“There are a number of young players up and down the country that they’ve sent scouts to watch, but Rigg’s performances have been very, very impressive.
“I think they’ll keep an eye on his progress and then determine whether they think he’s ready for the step up, but all signs suggest he will be capable.”
Chris Rigg shines for Sunderland
Photo by George Wood/Getty ImagesRigg, 17, has been one of Sunderland’s most important players this season. His emergence has seen him become recognised as the brightest talent in his division, which is why United have been watching him on a regular basis.
The youngster isn’t new to first team football. Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, who previously worked wonders with Amad Diallo on loan, handed Rigg his senior debut at the start of 2023.
Now, Rigg is a regular in the Sunderland team but it’s unclear how long he will remain at the Stadium of Light.
Rigg has scored three goals in 12 games for the promotion chasers.
It will help if United have a positive relationship with Sunderland, after loaning them Amad two seasons ago. Rigg is likely to attract a lot of attention next summer but a move could be possible in January if the price is right.
Crystal Palace are targeting a £20m-plus move for Rigg, as per The Sun.
Palace sporting director Dougie Frreedman is reportedly convinced Rigg will prove good enough for the Premier League. The Eagles made positive moves last year by signing Adam Wharton from Blackburn Rovers for £18m.
Sunderland are under no pressure to sell Rigg because he has plenty of time left on his contract. He signed a three-year deal last summer, so the Black Cats will resist any attempt to lure him away during the season.
Rigg has also represented England at U18 level.
