Mrs. Olabisi Are, widow of a former PUNCH’s Director, Dr. Lalekan Are, has been commended for her exceptional leadership and innovative approach as the pioneer principal of Apata Community Grammar School, Ibadan, Oyo State
The National President of the school’s Old Students Association, Adewumi Basorun, made the remarks during a visit to an orphanage in the Apata community, Ibadan, on Monday.
According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Tuesday, the visit was part of the school’s Founder’s Day celebrations, which will culminate on Thursday with a Gala Night to be chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and other dignitaries are also expected to attend.
During the visit, the old students donated food items to the orphanage.
Speaking on Mrs. Are’s influence, Basorun said, “We owe Mrs. Olabisi Are a debt of gratitude for shaping the lives of many generations who passed through ACGS during her tenure as principal. She was a visionary leader whose dedication impacted students, teachers, and parents alike.”
He added, “As former students, we continue to support the school through infrastructure and facility upgrades as a way to give back for all she did for us.”
Chairman of the organising committee, Dr. Abiola Oshodi, reminisced about the school’s early days in the 1980s.
He highlighted the struggles the students faced due to inadequate facilities but applauded their ability to excel academically and in extracurricular activities despite the challenges.
“Despite the lack of basic amenities back then, we remained competitive both in academics and sports. Today, our alumni are excelling in various fields globally. This reunion is not just about supporting our alma mater but also about giving back to the community,” Oshodi said.
He emphasized the importance of inspiring future generations to become visionary leaders and fostering a society free from crime and insecurity.
