Former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has officially stepped down as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Naija News reports that the former governor dumped the PDP to concentrate on a newly established initiative, the Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI).

The platform, aimed at youth empowerment, was recently inaugurated at Arewa House in Kaduna.

Bafarawa, who served two terms as Sokoto State Governor, submitted his resignation letter to the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagun, on January 8, 2025. The party’s national office formally acknowledged receipt of the letter on January 13, 2025.

In the resignation letter shared with journalists in Sokoto, Bafarawa explained that his departure from the PDP was driven by a desire to avoid any conflict of interest between his political affiliation and his leadership role in the youth-focused NGO, which was co-founded in late 2024.

“I will now focus my attention on creating awareness for youth entrepreneurship and empowerment initiatives aimed at making them self-productive, reducing redundancy, and fostering self-reliance,” Bafarawa stated.

He expressed his best wishes to the PDP, saying, “I wish the People’s Democratic Party and its leadership the very best in all their future endeavours.”

Reflecting on his time with the party, Bafarawa added, “I appreciate the opportunity given to me to contribute my quota to the development of the party as a card-carrying member.”

Bafarawa was a prominent figure within the PDP and played a significant role in Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s successful re-election in 2019, following his political break with Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako (Sarkin Yamman Sokoto).
