Delnaaz Irani On Kal Ho Naa Ho

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Delnaaz Irani talks about her audition in Kal Ho Naa Ho. She says, “You know this movie that I got, KHNK, the biggest and the best thing that ever happened in my career. When you’re not looking at or planning your career as such, mera kuch aisa nahi tha ki ek safari suit me manager joh har kisi producer ko bolu raha hai ki madam ki dates ho nahi hai, aisa kuch nahi tha mere pass, na manager, na agency, na kuch.” (Kal Ho Naa Ho” was the biggest and best thing to happen in my career. I wasn’t actively planning it—I had no manager, no agency, no one running around telling producers my dates weren’t available.)

She contined, “I got a call from Dharma from when I was doing my show, Yes Boss and my dates were packed but I said, ‘Aree waah,’ so I went, I did my audition jaise aap jaate ho aur aap audition dete ho and I didn’t get a call for 20 days. Main bhul bhi gayi, aaj ki taarikh me agar main aduition deti hu toh everyday I’m like, ‘Abhi tak nahi aya phone,’ so I didn’t get a call for 20 days but, maine socha bhi nahi kyuki I was so busy.” (I got a call from Dharma while doing Yes Boss. My dates were packed, but I auditioned anyway. I didn’t hear back for 20 days and forgot about it. Today, I’d be anxious, but back then, I was too busy to dwell on it.)

Delnaaz’s Final Audition

She added “Then I got a call again for a 2nd audition and that audition was in front on the Director, Nikhil Ji, so when Nikhil Advani sat next to the monitor and I was doing the scene… after that everything was final. Then we spoke about everything and they revealed how big the canvas is, it’s a Shah Rukh Khan starrer, there’s Preity Zinta, there’s Saif Ali Khan, there is Jaya Bachchan.” (I got a second audition, this time with director Nikhil Advani. After my scene, everything was finalized, and they revealed the film’s scale—starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, and Jaya Bachchan.)

She concluded, “Everybody was a legend even the entire supporting cast, usme main gayi, a newcomer and I was a no-name even on stage and to do such a big film, it was something that I will be thankful and grateful for.” (Everyone was a legend, even the supporting cast. I was a newcomer, a no-name even on stage, and getting to be part of such a big film is something I’ll always be grateful for.)

Delnaaz Irani’s Scene With SRK

“So a lot of my friends, they were like, ‘Oh my god, you’re such a bitch, you kissed Shah Rukh so many times, so I didn’t even think that way but, there were soo many re-takes, kabhi kuch camera ka ho gaya, kabhi kuch glass gir gaya, because of that we had to do the scene over and over again and to be honest, I have always been mesmerized, when Shah Rukh is around, when he was on set, it was always like…. for me, mere dimaag me ek pin drop silence hota hai, just observing him because his aura is just so different, he walks in and there’s this warmth, so for me it was just like… aaj bhi mere pass shabd nahi hai dekho.” (My friends joked, ‘You kissed Shah Rukh so many times!’ but I never saw it that way. Multiple re-takes were needed due to technical issues. Honestly, his presence mesmerized me—when he walked in, there was a warmth, and even today, I have no words to describe it.)
