Fabrizio Romano has attempted to clear up why he shared a quote from Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate discussing the future of Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.

It’s been known for some time now that Mbappe is coming towards the end of his contract at PSG, and it now seems all but certain that he’ll be leaving the club on a free transfer this summer, with Real Madrid expected to be his destination.

Konate hinted as much when he was asked about his fellow Frenchman, as he seemed to laugh off the idea of Liverpool signing the former Monaco man.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano explained that he was just sharing the quote from Konate, without having any particular knowledge of what the Reds ace may or may not know about Mbappe’s situation.

However, it seems this forms part of a picture of everyone inside football being more or less certain now that Mbappe will be on the move to Madrid this summer.

“With Mbappe, some fans have asked me why I posted on X about Ibrahima Konate playing down links with Liverpool by suggesting everyone knows where Mbappe is going,” Romano said.

“I can say that the feeling in both Real Madrid and PSG dressing rooms is that Mbappe is expected to join Real Madrid. The player also had the same feeling two years ago, but of course this year it looks different as he’s not staying at PSG.

“I don’t know if Konate knows anything, I was just sharing his quote, but the feeling with the clubs involved is that Mbappe is expected to move to Madrid at last.”
