Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Newcastle United and some key sagas involving potential ins and outs at St James’ Park.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano explained that Newcastle are yet to decide on a potential replacement for Dan Ashworth as sporting director, with this being seen as a hugely important decision for the future of their project, so not something that’s going to be rushed.

Meanwhile, Romano also discussed Callum Wilson’s situation after the Magpies striker was targeted by Atletico Madrid in January, though it seems their interest in the England international has now cooled.

Another interesting Newcastle story earlier in the season involved a potential move for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who remains a free agent since leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season.

It seems De Gea was open to joining Newcastle, but in the end the club decided not to pursue this deal, and it seems there’s now nothing happening there at all, with the Spaniard yet to find an opportunity that he’s seemingly prepared to accept.

Fabrizio Romano’s Newcastle transfer update

Writing in today’s column, Romano said: “It will be an interesting time at Newcastle United as they want to hold important internal discussions about how to replace Dan Ashworth.

“From what I heard, this is not something 100% clear yet and Newcastle want to take their time as they can’t make the wrong move…it’s crucial to continue with their project in the best way.

“Callum Wilson also seems to be in a slightly uncertain situation at Newcastle following a January saga involving Atletico Madrid. Still, Atletico Madrid are not currently in contact with Wilson or Newcastle.

“Their last contact was early January, and it was a clear no from Newcastle. So I’m not sure they will return, Atletico Madrid only considered that as an opportunity on loan for six months.

“A lot of fans also keep asking me about the future of David de Gea after he almost joined Newcastle. He was open to joining Newcastle in November/December when they had a goalkeepers emergency but in the end the club decided not to sign any new goalkeeper.

“Now we have a lot of rumours every week, but there is honestly no update and nothing is happening. He’s taking his time to see if right opportunity appears.”
