Bayer Leverkusen are not happy with all the speculation surrounding their manager Xabi Alonso amid interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich ahead of the summer, according to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Spanish tactician has done an incredible job at Leverkusen this season, taking them top of the Bundesliga table to now look clear favourites for the title, despite the immense dominance of Bayern over the last decade.

Alonso looks an ideal fit for Liverpool as they prepare for life after Jurgen Klopp this summer, while one imagines Bayern would also do very well to raid their rivals for this elite young coach, with Thomas Tuchel another big name we know will be stepping down at the end of this season.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano admitted this speculation was far from ideal for Leverkusen, though it seems they’re not letting it affect their results on the pitch, with Alonso clearly looking 100% focused on the job for the time being.

Alonso speculation not going down well as Bayer Leverkusen chase an historic title victory

Leverkusen are on the verge of history, with the team now favourites to win what would be their first ever Bundesliga title, so no wonder figures at the club would ideally do without frequent reports and doubts over Alonso’s future.

“We know Xabi Alonso is one of the names appreciated by Bayern, but how is all the speculation about the manager affecting his current club Bayer Leverkusen? Of course they are not happy with speculation, but it’s also part of the game,” Romano said.

“I can guarantee that Bayer and Xabi himself are 100% focused on this season, to make something historical, and at the moment we can see it’s not having a damaging effect on their form, which remains outstanding.

“And remember, nothing is done yet with Alonso and any other club precisely because Leverkusen are focused on winning titles, and it’s the same for Alonso.”
