Manchester United have explored the situation of highly-rated Bologna manager Thiago Motta as they continue to consider the future of Erik ten Hag, sources have informed CaughtOffside.

Motta has Bologna up in fourth place in Serie A, while his side have often been praised for their style of football in the Italian top flight, in stark contrast to the way Man Utd have so often appeared dis-jointed and uncertain with their performances under Ten Hag.

It’s not yet been decided that Ten Hag will definitely move on, but that hasn’t stopped key figures assessing options to replace the Dutch tactician, with Motta increasingly emerging as a strong candidate.

Sources with a close understanding of the situation have also told CaughtOffside that more experienced names like Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte are liked by United, with both set to be available this summer. Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi is also a name being considered, though the Italian tactician may be harder to get due to anticipated competition from clubs like Bayern Munich, while Liverpool and Chelsea can’t be ruled out either.

Bologna manager Thiago Motta to Manchester United?

Former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui had also been considered by United in the past, but it is thought that he would no longer be among the leading candidates. Initial contacts with the Spaniard took place but never went any further.

Ten Hag out at Man United and long list of players could follow

As well as Ten Hag possibly being set for the Old Trafford exit door, CaughtOffside understands that a long list of senior players could also be leaving this summer.

Anthony Martial is a free agent and looks all but guaranteed to leave, with a return to France expected to be a priority for the player, though he could also consider Saudi Arabia, or Italy, where he is liked by Inter Milan and Roma. It’s also considered a certainty that Sofyan Amrabat will be heading back to Fiorentina after an unsuccessful loan at MUFC since last summer.

Others who could leave would be Harry Maguire, who remains appreciated by West Ham United, while Raphael Varane is also increasingly expected to depart. United would also ideally like to sell Antony, but may struggle to find a buyer who’d give them the kind of money they’re looking for.

Mason Greenwood is also more likely to leave than to stay, though there will be further talks at the end of the season to fully clarify the situation, and the manager situation could be one factor that comes into play before a final decision is made.
