No sooner was he back in the picture at Liverpool than Thiago Alcantara was injured yet again- this time against Arsenal.
The Spaniard was destined to become a Reds great when he signed on at Anfield, but his time on Merseyside has been peppered by a quite horrendous injury record.
Transfermarkt note that he’s lost a total of 109 games because of those injuries, and it’s perhaps with that in mind, as well as Jurgen Klopp’s departure, that he could well consider that his time at Liverpool will shortly come to an end.
A transfer that promised so much has, unfortunately, delivered so little.
“Despite the rumours that Thiago doesn’t want to extend his contract at Liverpool, nothing is concrete yet between him and any other club. This is one for the summer,” Fabrizio Romano said in his exclusive Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside.
“Thiago is too serious and too professional to agree on a deal with another club now and not tell Liverpool about it.
“Everything will be decided in the next months, nothing has been agreed yet.”
A player that evidently takes his football career so seriously will surely have been incredibly disappointed that Liverpool’s loyal supporters never really got to see the best of him, other than in brief flashes.
As Romano states, nothing has yet been decided in terms of if he will definitely leave or where he will go.

However, with a new regime being onboarded before pre-season for the 2024/25 campaign, Thiago will understand that they can’t have passengers in the team.
Given his advancing years too – he will be 33 by the time next season kicks off – no new manager is likely to want to have one of their squad spaces taken up by someone so injury prone and who will take longer and longer to recover from injuries in future.
