EXCLUSIVE: Varun Dhawan was insecure with Sidharth Malhotra during SOTY; father David Dhawan, says, “These things happen in two-hero films”

Filmmaker David Dhawan’s son Varun Dhawan made his Bollywood debut with Student Of The Year, directed by Karan Johar. The movie also starred Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. SOTY garnered good responses from the audience and it established him and other bankable actors. However, for his debut film, Varun Dhawan felt upset with Sidharth Malhotra while shooting for the film but his father David Dhawan boosted his confidence. During the latest episode of The Invincibles season 2 with Arbaaz Khan, Dhawan shared how he became an actor and how he garnered love from people.

David Dhawan shares how Varun Dhawan worked with Karan Johar

Arbaaz asked if he got the hints from Varun on becoming an actor. David said, “I didn’t know about it and he went away. We sent him abroad, you know. They were both studying, one was in London, and the other was in America. And you know, he came back, and Lali said, ‘What will he do? Bank jobs are good these days’. I said, ‘You go and talk to him’. We never talked about films. All of a sudden, he went to Karan Johar (Director) to assist him. Karan knew the family very well. So, he did a movie with him My Name is Khan. He was there during the shooting and spent four days in the water, got sick, but he was there. I remember Ravi Chandran was the cameraman and he used to keep looking at him, speaking dialogues and all. Ravi told Karan, ‘You must watch this boy’.

He continued, “And suddenly, what happens? Karan comes home and says, ‘David, I want to introduce him’. I said, ‘Very good’. Then the photo session happened with him and Sidharth (Malhotra). They looked young and youthful, very good. When the film started, I was with him and some days, he used to be very upset also. These things happen in two-hero films. I said, ‘Listen, my son, you’re damn good. Your confidence is something else. Just remember one thing: put your foot on the shoulder and jump. That is your success. Don’t be afraid.” It happened. I remember the film was released, and Amit Ji (Amitabh Bachchan) and Jaya Ji (Jaya Bachchan) sent a message saying he is a long-race horse. After that, a lot of people said he needed a break from you. “

David Dhawan reveals how Main Tera Hero happened

So, I remember Ekta Kapoor showed me a South film, it’s a bang-on entertainment film. I looked at it, they had different actors. They said, “No, I won’t do it.” Then Rohit said, ‘If your son does it, do it.’ The next day, Ekta suddenly said, ‘I want this film, you do it, and I want your son.’ And that’s how Main Tera Hero happened,” he ended.
