L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad organized the sixth edition of the ‘WHITATHON’ Run to raise awareness about the early detection of Retinoblastoma (eye cancer) in children. The event took place on Sunday to commemorate the World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, which is observed for seven days starting on the second Sunday in May every year. The run was flagged off by Dr. Vineeth G, IPS, deputy commissioner of police, Madhapur Zone at University of Hyderabad, Gachibowli.
The funds raised from the Whitathon run are used to treat underprivileged children suffering from Retinoblastoma at no cost, as well as to support future research. Over 2,000 participants joined the cause this year, showing strong community support for the event. Dr. Vineeth G expressed his happiness at the large turnout in support of aiding patients of Retinoblastoma.

Dr. Swathi Kaliki, head of Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer at LVPEI, explained that the white reflex seen in children’s eyes can be a sign of eye cancer. Any child with such a reflex should undergo an eye screening immediately, as it could indicate the formation of a tumor in the retina. Detecting retinoblastoma early is crucial for preserving sight, the eye, and saving lives. Since Retinoblastoma can be hereditary, it is important for the next generation in the family to also get screened for it.
