Fabian Schar was a stunning Newcastle United signing.
Rafa Benitez made a lot of them but I think the Swiss defender shades it as the very best the Spaniard made for NUFC.
Rafa tipped off by his contacts in Spain, that due to a contract clause, Newcastle United could sign Fabian Schar for only £3m.
On 26 July 2018, the classy defender signed on at St James’ Park.
What a great capture he has proved to be.
It sums up just how clueless Steve Bruce was, in not rating Fabian Schar, Brucey preferring the likes of Clark, Fernandez, Lascelles and even midfielder Isaac Hayden at times, ahead of the Switzerland international.
Earlier this month (13 November 2024) Fabian Schar was asked by Swiss media, how he sees his Newcastle United situation, with his current contract set to end on 30 June 2025, blue Sport asking him if this points to his departure from NUFC in just over seven months time?
“I feel super comfortable at Newcastle.
“I have been playing for years and I have a coach who backs me.
“Everything is right for me.
“I would love to stay.
“The club and coach know what they have in me.
“Basically, it [a contract extension] has always happened relatively quickly in recent years.
“The club wanted to keep me, I wanted to stay.
“That’s why it has never been a big deal.
“There are more complicated cases than mine.”
Back in January of this year, a one year extension was announced (see below) taking Fabian Schar up to end of June 2025.
I would say it looks all but guaranteed that we will have a similar announcement very soon, taking the 32 year old up to end of June 2026 on a a new extended deal.
Ahead of that, Fabian Schar getting a little emotional via his personal social media, as he celebrates 200 games in black and white:
I could never have imagined to play 200 games for this incredible football club @NUFC!
Proud to put on the black and white stripes every week and play in front of you all… Here’s to many more 🖤🤍 pic.twitter.com/5GIwMOHdQj

Fabian Schar commenting on 8 January 2024 after agreeing a one year extension with NUFC to take him up to 30 June 2025:
“I feel really at home here, I feel so comfortable living in Newcastle.
“I love the city and I love playing for the club and the incredible fans.
“I can’t say enough how much I love them, and how much their support means to me.
“Playing for this team where I feel so comfortable with all my team-mates and with the coaching staff feels really like a family for me, so I’m really grateful to stay here a bit longer and hopefully to have some more exciting times.”
Fabian Schar will turn 33 next month but is still in great form/shape and it will surely suit both himself and Newcastle United that like Dan Burn, his deal will be extended to end of June 2026.
