Darwin Nunez is a fan favourite at Liverpool and might be their version of Thierry Henry.

That is the verdict from Liverpool legend Phil Thompson, who was was lyrical about the Uruguay forward to Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil on talkSPORT Breakfast.

Nunez has had a mixed season so far but has wracked up ten goals and ten assists in 31 appearances in all competitions this term for the Reds as he looks to cement his place as a key player under Jurgen Klopp.

At times, the 24-year-old has been criticised for poor finishing, including from McCoist in his chat with Thompson, who won seven league titles and three European cups with Liverpool.

But he always seems to be involved in Liverpool's attack in some way or another.

And that was evident in Liverpool's 4-0 win over Bournemouth at the weekend where Nunez scored twice, with his first goal drawing comparisons to Arsenal icon Henry.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Thompson said: "The great thing about Darwin, which is what fans love in players, he never gives up. He always has a go.

"Yeah, he has got his failings but the Liverpool fans absolutely [love] him for what he gives and he doesn't stop trying.

"I know where you are coming from Ally, he has just got to be a little bit cuter with his finishing.

"But didn't we see that in the Bournemouth game? A great move, it comes and dare I say, little bit Thierry Henry-like, and he just guides into the far corner.

"The second one that he scores is even better. Cross from Joe Gomez, reaching out for him, delicately with the outside of his right foot on the stretch, and puts it in the corner.

"I've not seen him in training but you would like to think that's what he's finishing.

Michael Owen predicts Darwin Nunez could become 'absolute force' in the Premier League after Mo Salah leaves Liverpool

"When he's going through, do a little dink over somebody rather than keep on putting his foot through the ball."

With Mohamed Salah facing a spell on the sidelines, Klopp is now more desperate than ever to find another attacking solution.

And while there is no denying that Nunez lacks a bit of composure with his finishing, his impact could aid the club's title run.

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League and look like the best-placed side to rival Manchester City for the crown.

They are five points clear of the champions, who are also level on points with Arsenal and Aston Villa in a congested top-four.

And there could be further silverware on the horizon with one foot in the Carabao Cup final.

Liverpool take on Fulham in the second leg of their semi-final encounter after winning the first leg 2-1, live on talkSPORT.
