What do fans of Premier League clubs think about what has been going on at their club and their hopes / wishes for the 2024/25 season?
Well, The Athletic have carried out a big survey of thousands of their paying subscribers.
The Athletic asking the fanbases of all 20 Premier League clubs – Are you feeling hope or fear, optimistic or pessimistic, ahead of the 2024/25 season.
First of all though, lets have a look at how The Athletic poll turned out 36, 24 and 12 months ago, gauging the sense of hope or optimism ahead of those 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24 campaigns:
First August 2021, before the 2021/22 Premier League season (Newcastle United at the time having Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce in charge):
Only Everton ‘ahead’ of Newcastle!
Then have a look at this one from The Athletic for Premier League clubs ahead of the 2022/23 season:
So Newcastle fans soaring to third top for optimism ahead of the first season that kicked off after Ashley, Arsenal and Tottenham topping the hope stakes.
What about ahead of last season though, Premier League fans looking ahead to the 2023/24 campaign, especially Newcastle United fans…
Well, Newcastle United fans dropping two places and five per cent points as a proportion of positive / negative fans.
Now we have the brand new one from The Athletic ahead of the 2024/25 season for Premier League clubs:
Newcastle United dropping two place and 2 percent (89 percent of the Newcastle United fans positive, as opposed to 91 percent 12 months ago).
Considering 12 months ago Newcastle United fans had just seen their team finish top four and were looking forward to a Champions League campaign, yet have only dropped 2 percent after an injury-riddled season saw them end up seventh, though still only eight points off top four. That suggests to me that the Newcastle United fans surveyed, see the team bouncing back massively, if getting fair luck with injuries.
Interesting to look at the other extreme. Despite spending another quarter of a billion on players, far more than any other club, making it over one and a half billion spent on new signings since these owners took over in 2022, 71 percent of Chelsea fans on the negative side of things!
