Former Premier League striker John Fashanu believes that ex-Nigeria stars Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha should be considered for the Super Eagles’ vacant managerial position, insisting that the nation should stop looking to recruit managers from European countries such as Sweden and Germany.
Speaking exclusively to luckyblock.com, Fashanu said: “There are some wonderful Nigerian players in the world of football at the moment, bsuch as Victor Osimhen or Alex Iwobi. There are also some brilliant ex-players, such as Nwankwo Kanu, who are waiting for the opportunity to be the next manager of the Super Eagles. I will keep saying it and making my voice heard on the matter, why is it that we have to go to Europe and bring in a manager from countries like Sweden or Germany and put him in the Nigeria role? They don’t even speak the language. What are we doing?

“I would love to see one of our former players become the next Nigeria manager. That would be fantastic. One of my wishes would be Jay-Jay Okocha because he was an amazing player and also has a very talented footballing brain. He’s someone I’d love to see in the role. However, keep in mind that I’m no stranger to management, I’m here! Maybe it is about time that I was Nigeria manager.”
On Osimhen’s next career move
Fashanu also touched on Napoli and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen and believes he should look to join Liverpool this summer if the opportunity arises.
He said: “I have spent my life playing for smaller sides, so advising Victor Osimhen on which of the bigger clubs to join is very difficultbfor me. I’m not going to say Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal.
Everybody knows that Liverpool are one of the biggest and best clubs in the world and they’re always towards the top of the table, so I think we can quite safely say that he should join Liverpool.”
On Iwobi impact in Super Eagles
Another Nigerian player in the spotlight following a string of good
performances is Fulham’s Alex Iwobi, whom Fashanu insisted is a “legend” in his home country.
“Alex Iwobi is a legend back in Nigeria and everybody there is talking
about him,” he continued. “It is fantastic that he has had such an impact and that is what it is all about. Football is about having an impact and you can only do it by the way you play on that pitch. Once you cross the white line, that is when people want to see you and hear what you have to say. I think he has been fantastic! He is a great name for Nigeria and I like his play.”
