Collector Encourages Support for Handloom Industry in Gadwal

The Jogulamba Gadwal District Collector, BM Santosh, has urged citizens to support the handloom industry by wearing handloom clothes and setting an example for others. Speaking at the ‘Handloom Celebrations’ organized by the Handloom and Textile Department at the IDOC meeting hall on Thursday, the Collector emphasized the importance of promoting this traditional craft.

The event marked the week-long Praja Palana – Praja Vijayotsavalu celebrations and began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Collector. During his address, he pointed out that the handloom sector is the second-largest source of employment in India after agriculture. He also highlighted the global fame of Gadwal handloom sarees, which have earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for their unique design and quality.

The Collector mentioned several government initiatives aimed at supporting handloom workers. These include the Thrift Fund, Pavala Vaddi (low-interest loans), and the Handloom Insurance Scheme. He emphasized that these measures are designed to improve the livelihoods of those working in the handloom sector.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s famous words, “Be the change you wish to see,” the Collector encouraged people to actively wear handloom clothes. He noted that simple actions, like choosing handloom over other fabrics, can inspire change. He also spoke about the historical importance of the handloom sector during India’s freedom struggle, particularly the Khadi movement.

Amid growing Western influences, the Collector stressed the need to preserve India’s traditional crafts. He urged young people to learn the skills of the handloom profession and contribute to its sustainability. Wearing and supporting handloom products, he said, is essential to protecting the industry for future generations.

As part of the celebrations, the Collector inaugurated stalls at the Collectorate premises showcasing Gadwal sarees. He praised the artisans for their intricate designs and the high quality of their work.

During the event, skilled handloom workers, as well as students who participated in a fashion show and essay writing and elocution competitions, were honored with mementos and certificates. Additionally, Pavala Vaddi loan checks worth Rs. 6.05 lakh were distributed to handloom workers, providing them with financial support.

The Collector concluded by acknowledging the efforts of everyone involved in the event and reiterated the need for collective action to promote and preserve the rich heritage of the handloom industry.
