Frenkie de Jong has lost his legendary calm. Since his arrival at FC Barcelona, the Dutch midfielder has taken the blows without flinching. However, the Catalan press had a field day during the summer of 2022. At that time, the Blaugrana leaders did everything possible to push the former Ajax Amsterdam player towards the exit. They therefore sent a few messages to the media in order to put pressure on FDJ. So, Sport or Mundo Deportivo, to name but a few, revealed that Barça agreed with Manchester United to sell a player with an XXL salary. But the Dutchman stood his ground and refused to leave his club.

De Jong settles his scores

Subsequently, De Jong responded on the pitch, where he is an important part of Xavi’s eleven. This season, he has already played 22 matches in all competitions, all as a starter (1 goal). He is trying to do his best to help his club get back on track. But FDJ is not helped. In recent weeks, the pro-Barça press has once again discussed its future. Thus, we learned by reading these publications that the 26-year-old player does not want to extend his lease, which ends in June 2026, nor lower his salary. Other media have indicated that he would not be against leaving this summer of 2024. He would be tired and unhappy with the project in place, he who wants to join an ambitious club in the Champions League.

Yesterday his name was linked to PSG. Indeed, Sport indicated that the residents of the Parc des Princes want to invest 60 million euros on the Dutch midfielder. Tottenham are ready to line up, while Manchester United still dream of welcoming them. But the Iberian media clarified that Barça wants more money for their player. Annoyed by all these rumors and information published, Frenkie de Jong decided to break the silence at a press conference before the Champions League match against Naples. We can even say that he has settled his scores with the press once and for all. “Lately I’ve been a little angry with what the press is writing. Things that come out are not true. Aren’t you ashamed of what you publish? (…) I don’t understand why they say things that are lies. This irritates me.”

The press is expensive

He added : “I think what you need to change is what you do with many players and coaches, writing things that are not true (…) The squad is made up of several people. Sometimes I hear that I don’t have the level of Barça. I think the press should change and stop writing lies about me (…) I consider the club like my teammates, the staff, I take a lot of pleasure in it. The press sometimes criticizes my level, it doesn’t matter, because everyone can have their own opinion. But I don’t accept lies.” Relaunched on his future, the former Ajax Amsterdam player was cash.

“It’s a lot of smoke, a lot of lies, that I’m asking for around 40 million euros… The truth is that it’s far from reality. I won’t say numbers, but they made up a story that isn’t true. I am very happy at Barça. It’s the club of my dreams. I hope to continue playing for Barça for many years to come.” Enough to put an end to the PSG track in particular. Finally, when asked by a journalist if the information leaked to the media came from the club, De Jong said: “I can’t say that, I don’t have any information about it. I know a lot of things are made up, you write things that are not true. You usually do it with a lot of people.” The message got through…
