The Federal Government has successfully averted a potential flood disaster in Southern Nigeria, as recent assessments indicate a significant reduction in flood risks.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology Chief Uche Nnaji, on Saturday.

In a press release issued by the Director of Media and Corporate Communications at the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Felix Nnaji stated, “Initial projections based on satellite imagery indicated a significant overflow of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, which resulted in the inundation of over 18,000 hectares of land by mid-September.”

According to the minister, this alarming situation prompted urgent flood control measures for downstream states, including Kogi, Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

However, thanks to proactive efforts by local authorities and improved water management strategies at the Lagdo Dam, “The risk has significantly subsided,” Nnaji confirmed.

He said the flood threat has now been effectively averted, bringing relief to residents in these vulnerable regions.

He emphasised the importance of ongoing vigilance despite the reduced threat.

“While the immediate danger has been curtailed, it is essential for all residents and communities in historically flood-prone areas to maintain vigilance,” he advised.

The minister urged state governments to continue monitoring local water levels and to remain prepared for rapid response measures if necessary.

“We will continue our collaboration with NIHSA and NASRDA to ensure real-time monitoring of the situation,” he added.

He encouraged residents to stay alert as weather patterns remain unpredictable, and the government will provide regular updates as new information becomes available.
