The Federal Government has emphasised President Bola Tinubu’s proactive stance on addressing food security in Nigeria and his administration’s deep commitment to combating climate change.

The Special Assistant to the President on Climate Change Matters, Yusuf Kailani, stated this while fielding questions from journalists at a high-level dialogue on the flood impact report in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said, “The President has raised concerns about the impacts of climate change and is actively leading efforts to address them. Professionals and experts are being engaged to ensure the continuity and success of the initiatives, stressing the importance of partnerships with relevant stakeholders to achieve the nation’s climate goals.

“Governance is a continuous project. The government cannot do it alone. As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming COP29, numerous activities are underway to showcase the country’s progress on the global stage.”

Earlier in his address, the Executive Secretary of HEDA Resource Centre, Sulaimon Arigbabu, stated that climate change is a reality, emphasising that the most affected people in Nigeria are usually community members, rural dwellers, and vulnerable farmers.

Arigbabu explained that when farmers are impacted by climate change, the nation’s food and national security are threatened.

“But with information and knowledge, people’s vulnerability to climate change can be reduced, leading to resilience,” he assured.

The expert also stressed the importance of early warning signs, such as those provided by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency.
