Football is not going well in Spain. The government announced that it was placing the federation under supervision after the various scandals that had rocked the institution, notably the affairs surrounding Luis Rubiales. It is the Superior Sports Council (CSD), an organization dependent on the Ministry of Sports, which will take over management via a supervisory commission. If the government has its reasons, this tutoring does not please FIFA and UEFA at all, who see it as political interference.

The two institutions also reacted through a joint press release. “FIFA and UEFA are following the situation surrounding the RFEF closely and with great concern. FIFA and UEFA will seek additional information to assess the extent to which the CSD’s appointment of the so-called “Supervision, Standardization and Representation Commission” may affect the RFEF’s obligation to manage its affairs in a manner independent and free from inappropriate government interference.” As a sanction, UEFA could go so far as to exclude Spanish clubs from its competitions.
