This Monday, the football world had an eye on FIFA’s The Best ceremony. And while several distinctions were awarded without much discussion, the title of best player of the year 2023 was given to Lionel Messi. A reward which raises questions, especially since the 2022 World Cup no longer counted in the awarding of the trophy.

As a reminder, this title is awarded to players according to the votes of several people linked to football including other players who are eligible for the award. This is particularly the case of Kylian Mbappé. The details of the Bondynois votes have also been published. And, surprise (or not), the PSG striker decided to give first place to his former teammate Lionel Messi. Quite a surprising choice while KM7 put Erling Haaland second and Kevin De Bruyne in third position.
