The clock ticking for Newcastle United and a number of other clubs, when it comes to PSR and the 30 June 2024 deadline.
That will mark the latest three year accounting period for Premier League clubs, with allowed maximum losses over that period of time of £105m, though not all expenditure is counted for PSR purposes.
If we go back 18 days, these six Premier League clubs were named by this Sky Sports report as having to raise cash to stay within PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) – 6 June 2024:
‘As many as six Premier League clubs face having to sell players before the end of June in order to comply with the division’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
That date is the cut-off point for the financial year across the top flight, where clubs must show they have made losses of no more than £105m over the last three years – or less if they have spent some of that time outside the top flight.
Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester are all under the pressure of losing a key asset or two, Sky Sports News understands, before the change over into the new financial year.’
I think that most Newcastle United fans are now accepting that this is the case, NUFC having to bring some cash in by 30 June 2024 at the latest, to satisfy PSR for these last seasons of financial activity.
However, how much exactly needs to be generated by Newcastle United?
An interesting update from the usually very reliable Athletic on Monday morning.
The Athletic stating that their information is that £25m will be enough to get Newcastle United on the right side of the PSR line.
They report that this is where Yankuba Minteh comes in.
A lot of intense media speculation that the 19 year old could be the one sold to help ensure PSR compliance.
The Athletic saying that with obviously Eddie Howe and Newcastle United having zero interest in selling key players such as Bruno and Isak, then Minteh could be set to leave.
The club believing the teenager does have to potential to maybe make it longer-term in the Premier League. However, with the market still yet to properly warm up and made extra difficult by both the Euros and Copa America in progress, the chances are unlikely this week of selling older NUFC squad players who could/would sell before the end of August when the transfer window eventually ends.
This week will no doubt reveal all, or at least as much as we are ever going to find out, about what Newcastle United need to do this week to be PSR compliant.
