After having been at the receiving end of some major hammerings from Bayern Munich in the recent past, Barcelona got a measure of revenge last night as they thrashed the Bavarians 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League.

An inspired display from the hosts, led by captain and hat-trick hero Raphinha, along with masterclasses from Pedri and Marc Casado in midfield, and magic from Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal, secured a statement win for Hansi Flick & co.

After all, Barcelona scored four goals against Bayern Munich for the second time in their UEFA Champions League history, after doing so in April 2009 under Pep Guardiola (4-0).

It was a game where Flick showcased the strength of youth and La Masia yet again and the trust he placed in the academy.

Indeed, at 24 years and 185 days, Barcelona’s starting lineup against Bayern Munich had their lowest average age in the UEFA Champions League since November 2011 against BATE Borisov (23 years and 93 days).

As soon as the game kicked off at Montjuic, it took less than a minute for Raphinha to put Barcelona in the lead.

The Brazilian’s opener last night, just 54 seconds into the game, is Barcelona’s second-earliest goal in the Champions League, after one by Mark van Bommel against Panathinaikos in 2005 (36 seconds).

After scoring one more just before half-time, Raphinha completed his hat-trick in the second period to seal the triumphant victory for Barça, in the process joining some elite company.

Indeed, Raphinha became the fourth Brazilian to score a hat-trick for Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, after Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Neymar.

Fermin Lopez was heavily involved in the forward forays for Barça and ended up getting the assist for their first and second goals on the night, scored by Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

In doing so, Fermin (21 years and 165 days) became the youngest player to provide two assists for Barcelona in a Champions League match since Isaac Cuenca in 2011 against BATE Borisov (20 years and 223 days).
