A recent report from Joan Poqui via Mundo Deportivo has unveiled an intriguing approach from Barcelona manager Hansi Flick during the recent El Clasico.

Despite facing a disallowed goal by Kylian Mbappe and several challenging moments that Real Madrid created in the first half, Flick remained firm in his game plan, especially regarding his defensive strategy.

In fact, at halftime, he encouraged the Barcelona squad to stick firmly to their advanced defensive approach, demanding precision and focus.

Flick’s instructions were clear and firm— “anyone who falls behind one metre will be substituted.”

His message was that a single metre out of place could compromise the team’s plan, and he expected each player to stay disciplined.

What changed in the second half?

Flick’s main adjustments came in the form of substitutions, rather than any major tactical shifts. However, he introduced a slight change in the team’s approach between halves.

In the first half, Barcelona pressed Madrid high up the pitch, especially during Real’s build-up. By the second half, observing Real Madrid’s difficulty in establishing consistent threats, Flick shifted to a more possession-focused approach.

This allowed Barcelona to control the game by holding onto the ball rather than relying on intense pressing. The introduction of Frenkie de Jong played a key role in this shift.

Two learnings from the game

Two major takeaways emerged from this Clasico. First, collectively, Barcelona’s recent dominant performances against Bayern and Real Madrid have sent a strong message to the football world—this team is no longer just a background player.

Second, from Flick’s perspective, he is totally committed to a style that defines modern Barcelona. His strategy of high pressure and offensive playmaking close to the opponent’s area has become a defining feature of the team.

The players have responded positively to his approach, showing consistency and dedication in executing his vision game after game.
