A Non Governmental Organisation, the Christian Conscience, has warned that Nigeria is likely to be hit with food shortages in the coming months owing to the recent flooding and insecurity affecting farmers especially in the Northern part of Nigeria.

The group’s National Publicity Director, Tunji Oguntuase, made this known in a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday.

According to Oguntuase, the position was among the major high points of decisions reached at the monthly executive meeting of the group held on Saturday in Lagos.

According to the group, flooding is a global issue and its devastating effects cannot be over emphasised, and as such, requires concerted efforts by the government on all levels to step up actions on how to prevent future occurrences to save lives and properties of citizens.

The group noted that the dams across the nation were built many years ago based on the then prevailing terrain and respective locations, maintaining that global climate change and the ever increasing population have changed the narrative which calls for an engineering solution for upgrade or construction of new dams.

With the recent flooding in Maiduguiri, Borno State with the collapse of the dam that brought unprecedented damage and agony to the people, the group called on the government to take immediate steps to avoid a repeat of such occurrences.

“The position of the group on this issue, was jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr. Mrs Yetunde Akinluyi and the National General Secretary, Dr. Kolawole Verrals,” the statement noted.

The group added an immediate need for proactive measures in preventing flooding now that the rainy season has begun to set in to avoid loss of human life & damage of properties.

The group commiserated with the Bormo State Government and citizens of Maiduguri and prayed for an end to the flooding.
