The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has stressed the need for traditional rulers to be focused on the development of their areas, and avoid land and chieftaincy disputes.

Mr Boateng said in the past, chiefs were particularly involved in wars, saying the era of war was over, and replaced with strategic development to reduce poverty and disease.

This was contained in a speech read for him at the inaugural ceremonies of four traditional councils in the Volta Region.

The four newly traditional councils inaugurated were the Agortime, Ave-Dakpa, Agave and Sokpoe Traditional councils in the Agortime-Ziope, Akatsi-North and the South Tongu districts.

Mr Boateng said chiefs had a lot of responsibility to protect and conserve their environment against all forms of distraction.

He assured the newly inaugurated councils of government’s support to enable them to function effectively.

Mr Boateng announced that the various traditional councils would be equipped and provided with adequate staff that would enable them to work to meet their set development agenda.

The Paramount chief of Agave Traditional Area, Togbega Xedihor Hlitabo IV, thanked the government for granting the traditional area a council status, which he said would help promote issues relating to chiefs in the area.

Togbega Xlitabo said the council would work hard and bring to an end chieftaincy disputes, which occurred deliberately due to the financial strength of those who did not qualify to become chiefs.
