Phil Foden says he is yet to reach world-class player status despite being praised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
Following Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Bournemouth last week in the Premier League, where Foden scored the winning goal, City manager Pep Guardiola hailed the England international as a world-class player and complimented for its versatility.
Today, Phil Foden explains why he has yet to reach world-class player status and says he needs to perform at the highest level consistently. Speaking to reporters, the player said: “I wouldn’t say I’m world class yet – I think I have the potential to be, but to hear that from the manager is special for me. I want to continue to improve and become a better player. I have to do it regularly in the biggest matches and the biggest occasions.
Foden plays it modest
“It’s by doing this for several years that you acquire the status of a world-class player. I’m enjoying the season and I’m in great shape at the moment, so I want to continue this momentum. Sometimes it just clicks. It’s perhaps my best season, yes. This is the most consistent series of matches I have played. I also play in a new position, more inside and more in midfield, and I like it.”
The 23-year-old has been in great form since the start of the season. He scored 16 goals in 39 matches in all competitions while playing in midfield and provided 10 assists. In the absence of key attacking players like Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne during the first half of the season, Foden contributed to the team’s success.
