Manchester United chiefs are reportedly prepared to end their pursuit of Manuel Ugarte due to Paris Saint-Germain’s firm stance on their €70 million (£59m) asking price.
That being said, INEOS’ new target for the position is tipped to cost even more, largely because of the integral and influential role he plays at his club.
Morten Hjulmand was thought to be on United’s shortlist prior to his move from Lecce to Sporting Lisbon last year. After the €21m deal was finalised, he became the Portuguese outfit’s second most expensive signing in their history, surpassed only by Viktor Gyokeres.
Across his first term in the division, the 25-year-old featured in 48 games in all competitions, notching four goals and four assists in the process. He recorded a remarkable passing accuracy of 87 per cent, plus four duels won per match.
Dubbed a ‘natural leader’ by journalist Zach Lowy, Hjulmand has just been bestowed the armband in Lisbon following longtime servant Sebastian Coates’ exit. To be named captain after just one single season at the club only highlights the esteem in which the Dane is held by Sporting officials.
United already know how much they need to pay to prise Hjulmand from Sporting
As such, it’s no surprise that he’s back on United’s radar – much to Sporting’s dismay. INEOS have set their sights on the player as they believe he can form a formidable partnership with young Kobbie Mainoo while aiding the teenager’s development in his sophomore season of senior action.
Correio de Manha reports that if any interested sides – including the Reds – want to obtain Hjulmand’s signature this summer, they’ll have to activate his £67.5m release clause. There is no option of negotiating a cheaper transfer.
