However, Holgate has made just five league appearances his arrival in the summer and is keen to leave the Saints to play more games.

Bundesliga side Stuttgart were interested, but Sheffield United, who sit rock bottom of the Premier League table, are set to add the 27-year-old to their ranks.

After rising through the ranks at boyhood club Barnsley, Holgate signed for Everton in 2015 for just £2million.

His best spell for the Toffees came between 2019 and 2022, making 80 Premier League appearances across three campaigns.

Holgate has featured 149 times for the club in total but his role in the side has declined as he played just nine matches last season.

Minutes this season have shown little sign of improvement, with just 469 played over seven appearances in all competitions.

The defender has started just four of Southampton's 28 matches in the Championship this season, with the Saints 3rd in the table.

Russel Martin's side are looking for an instant return to the Premier League but Holgate may play no further part in their campaign.

He will join a Blades side who have won just two Premier League matches this season and are nine points off safety.
