Hansi Flick has recently raised eyebrows with his statement on Sergi Roberto, as he refused to brand him a Barcelona player and seemed to all but close the door on the midfielder’s contract renewal.

Roberto was reportedly waiting for Barcelona to make an offer all summer. But a return to Catalonia appears to be an unlikely proposition.

Roberto hurt by Flick’s statement

According to Diario AS, Flick’s crystal clear response when asked about Sergi Roberto’s future has not gone down well with the player.

When asked about Roberto’s future, Flick said, “He’s not a Barça player, as things stand.”

The Spaniard was reportedly hurt by Flick’s tone, which is hardly surprising considering the fact that he spent all his life as a Barcelona player.

What does the club say?

The report adds that Barcelona believe Flick’s tone was assumed rude because of his lack of proficiency in English.

The club further said that Flick had no intention of belittling the player and his contributions to the Barcelona team. The German also did not want to prolong the discussion.

What’s next for Sergi Roberto?

Nevertheless, the statement from Hansi Flick seems to suggest there is no way for Barcelona to come up with a contract for Roberto anytime soon.

This could lead to the Spaniard considering other offers on the table. There is no shortage of suitors either, with the likes of Aston Villa, Ajax and West Ham interested in his services.

Although several La Liga clubs are also interested in acquiring the services of Roberto, the veteran appears keen on a new challenge abroad.
