The story of Sergi Roberto this summer has been a great tragedy. The loyal servant of Barcelona is not a member of the club anymore, as his contract ran out at the end of last season.

Roberto was promised a new contract under Xavi Hernandez’s term. But things have changed since Hansi Flick has taken over, and it appears Barcelona are not in a position to hand Roberto a new contract.

As a result, Roberto is training at the Barcelona facilities while searching for a new destination. Sevilla, to that end, have emerged as a potential destination for the midfielder, but things have gotten a bit difficult lately.

Roberto awaiting Sevilla’s salary space problem

According to Diario AS, Roberto’s move to Sevilla is being hindered by the Andalusian club’s salary cap constraints.

Roberto’s versatility and experience would be valuable additions to Sevilla’s squad, especially after the recent departures of key players like Fernando Reges, Ivan Rakitic, and Sergio Ramos.

The club are also preparing for the imminent retirement of Jesus Navas in December, and Serbian midfielder Nemanja Gudelj is reportedly considering a lucrative offer from the Middle East.

Gudelj’s potential departure could open up the necessary salary space for Roberto’s signing. Although Roberto is not a natural defensive pivot, his ability to occupy similar positions makes him a desirable asset.

His arrival would complement Sevilla’s recent acquisition of Saul Niguez from Atlético Madrid, strengthening the team’s midfield options.

With only 20 days remaining in the summer transfer window, both Roberto and Sevilla are eager to finalize the move.

Roberto, a player with over a decade of service at Barcelona, is hopeful of continuing his career in a familiar environment under García Pimienta’s guidance.

Interestingly, Roberto is not the only Barcelona player eyeing a move to Sevilla. Ansu Fati has also garnered interest from the Andalusian club.

A last-minute loan deal for Fati is a possibility, though it faces challenges due to his high salary demands and interest from wealthier suitors.

Nevertheless, Sevilla remains hopeful and determined to explore all avenues until the transfer market closes.
