Liverpool’s first steps in the post-Jurgen Klopp era have hit another setback.

The Reds have reportedly been turned down by their former sporting director Michael Edwards after approaching the executive about a return.

Edwards is respected as one of the brightest brains in football leadership, having masterminded Liverpool’s rise back to the top of football alongside Klopp and club president Mike Gordon.

However, he left the club in the summer of 2022, and has now rejected an offer to restructure the team, as he’s not interested in a senior role at any club and is looking to pursue his own business interest.

After leaving Anfield, Edwards set up his own company alongside former Liverpool colleague Ian Graham, providing analytics for multiple clubs.

The blow of his departure was softened by the news that his no.2, Julian Ward would be taking over, however, Ward lasted just a year in the job before stepping away.

Jorg Schmadtke took the role at the start of the season on a short-term contract, but he will relinquish his duties at the end of the January transfer window.

Much is up in the air on Merseyside since Klopp’s bombshell announcement that he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

On top of Edwards’ rejection, Liverpool fans have had more bad news after captain Virgil van Dijk made some ill-timed comments to the media.

Asked about his future post-Klopp, he said: "That's a big question. I don't know.

"Hopefully we will have the success we all dream of and by then probably there will be more clarification about what the club wants for the future and then we will see.”
