Lille midfielder Angel Gomes had to be taken to hospital after he suffered a serious head injury during their opening Ligue 1 match with Reims.

The former Manchester United academy graduate collided with Reims defender Amadou Kone, who was subsequently sent off for the challenge, just 11 minutes into the game on Saturday. While Gomes received attention, the game was delayed for 34 minutes as the 23-year-old had to be treated on the pitch immediately before being taken to hospital for further examinations.

Gomes was conscious again before he left the stadium and had been asking about the score of the match from his hospital bed.

Both sets of supporters at the Stade Auguste-Delaune sang Gomes’ name as he received attention on the pitch. He was then strapped to a stretcher and carried off the pitch before being transferred to hospital.

Speaking after the match, Lille manager Bruno Genesio said (via BBC Sport): “The latest news is rather reassuring, but it’s better to be careful.

“Angel asked if he was going to play [next] Saturday. It’s a good sign if he has a sense of humour. The match was secondary for me tonight.

“Angel was conscious when he was carried out. I know he spoke, he asked about the result, he showed he’s in good spirits, but I think we have to wait a bit.”

Manchester United sent a message of support via social media, which read: “Sending love and strength to Angel Gomes who has been taken to hospital following a collision while playing for Lille. We’re thinking of you, Angel.”

Gomes joined United in 2006 aged six and make his way through the academy ranks and into the first team. His Premier League debut came in May 2017 against Crystal Palace and he went on to make nine senior appearances for the club before leaving for regular first-team football.

We are wishing Gomes a speedy recovery.
