Former Manchester United star admits watching former club is ‘difficult’ at times

It’s no secret that Manchester United are enduring one of their worst campaigns since the Premier League began in 1992.

Erik ten Hag’s men have fallen adrift of the Champions League places and their only hope of silverware is the FA Cup, with Coventry City standing in their way of another trip to Wembley at the end of the season.

In the league, United have been hopeless and speaking recently, former United winger Luis Nani has commented on the situation at Old Trafford.

Nani spent eight years at the club between 2007 and 2015 and currently plays in the Turkish first-division at the young age of 37.

“There have been times when it’s been difficult to watch the team,” Nani told The Mirror.

“We’re not used to being in this position in the table. We were always a team used to competing for first position. The last few years the team hasn’t been able to do that, but we know it’s a process and you have to readjust the team, the club.

“We had so many good years in the past. When you have that, you have to accept some moments like this will come. There’s pressure, because there are big names in the past who did well for the club, so there will be comparisons. Those playing today need to show up.

“But now it’s a different time, with different characters and personalities. At that time, we were more like warriors. We were more like ‘we go to the field to fight to win’ and it didn’t matter the way we played. We found a way to win.”

Calls to take action are increasing with each passing week but as things stand, it is looking likely that Erik ten Hag will be given the chance to turn things around with another transfer window.

INEOS, who have assumed responsibility for the club’s football operations following their 25% acquisition of the club, are making wholesale changes to the club’s structure.

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will be able to spend freely this summer but the likelier case is that United will need to generate funds by selling some of their highest earners.
