Former Premier League striker hails Rasmus Hojlund strike vs Luton Town as ‘genius’

Rasmus Hojlund scored a quick-fire brace in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Luton Town on Saturday evening.

After a slow beginning to his career at Old Trafford, Hojlund – signed from Atalanta for £72 million – has now scored in six consecutive games to make it 13 goals in his first 30 outings for United, including seven in 20 in the league.

Thankfully United made the perfect start against Rob Edwards’ side at the weekend. The first goal hitting the back of the net after just 37 seconds when a wayward pass across defence found Hojlund before he drove towards goal.

The Denmark international scored his second goal with his chest at Kenilworth Road and it looked like he meant it. Fellow young forward Alejandro Garnacho volleyed shot before the ball deflected off Hojlund and past the goalkeeper into the net.

The goal itself was pure genius and Hojlund knew exactly what he was doing, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton told the It’s All Kicking Off podcast.

However, there has been debate as to whether or not it was a fluke.

Sutton is under no illusion that instinctive Hojlund meant it.

“The chested goal was genius. Anybody who has played sport to a reasonable level would know that he meant that,” Sutton said on It’s All Kicking Off podcast on Monday, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“You have a blueprint in your head and it’s because of hours and hours of training and being in situations, your peripheral vision, you’re just aware and in those moments it happens so fast, but you know what you want to do and try to do and it’s instinct. It’s impudence. That’s what it is.”

If Hojlund didn’t mean to score with his chest, what do people think he was trying to do?

The Dane is a scorer of all goals. That said, the 21-year-old could have had a hat-trick against the Hatters on Sunday. That would have silenced a lot of his critics that emerged earlier this season. Now, however, they’re all very quiet.

Hojlund will be aiming to continue his goalscoring form when United host Fulham this weekend.
